I will NURTURE a heart of wisdom!
DECLARATION & RESOLUTION #4
The fourth and last declaration in the Live Recession Proof Now program is the commitment to nurture a heart of wisdom and generosity. Someone may ask, what does generosity and giving have to do with wealth, finances, or even living recession proof? Well, if you have gone to church long enough or listened to any popular health, wealth, “name it and claim it” televangelists, you may believe the answer is as simple as one of the following:
- Give and it shall be given pressed down, shaken together, …
- It is better to give than to receive
- If you sow bountifully then you will reap a harvest
- Money is not yours, it is God’s. You are just a steward.
Although all these statements are biblical, we believe they are often quoted out of context and don’t address the heart of the matter. They don’t go far enough.
We believe the resolve to nurture a heart of generosity is the most important because it unlocks the key to financial peace and prosperity. To live generously allows you to operate within God’s kingdom and economy. When you give and nurture a heart of compassion you will transform your life and change the world for the Glory of God.
God’s economy is unconventional. It is the reverse of worldy wisdom which emphasizes the need to save, build up wealth for security and retirement, and to pass it on to the next generation. This conventional way of thinking is not necessarily a bad thing, LRPN teaches the importance of these financial virtues. But in God’s economy, to build true wealth we must give and spare not. God wants our hearts to be selfless and other centered. Proverbs 11:24 -25 says, “There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that with-holdeth more than is meet but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall water also himself.” To the world or the conventional way of thinking, this is illogical and doesn’t make any sense. How can giving away your money increase it? And, how does holding on to money cause poverty? Well, because God is the source of wealth and he has established the principles for financial blessing. We are operating on God’s bank account in heaven. He gives to those who gives and takes away from those who are stingy and hoard. Once we understand this we will be freer with money. It won’t control us anymore. We will learn to trust God to supply all our needs.
The command to give in scripture is not limited to tithing or giving to the mega church preacher, who most likely lives in a bigger house than you and drives a newer car. God also wants you to give to the poor and those who are in more desperate need. Yes, you can give your money to help ministries that need to be funded, to support missionaries, and even give to the church building fund. But, there are also individuals and people who you can touch directly with your money, time, resources, and support. Proverbs 21:13 says, “Whoso stoppeth his ears to the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.” God is very concerned about the poor, the fatherless, and the widow. And we his people, are the means He uses to help them. This is how we spread His love and shine the light of the gospel. That is how we Glorify Him with our money and resources. This is what we mean by nurturing a heart of generosity and compassion.
In module 4, we will encourage and provoke you to love and good works through scriptures and giving practical applications and ideas. You don’t have to be a wealthy philanthropist to live out God’s mandate to be a generous giver. We will show you how.
